Romania rally past Russia to stay in contention for fifth place

Romania easily defeated Russia 33:23, on the last day’s opening game, to earn their first victory at VRULITTOS 2018 and also book a place in the places 5-6 match.

The Romanians kept their composure throughout the whole game, while Russia faced many troubles in threating from the 9m line and will now try to avoid last place in their final game.

A 5-1 defence helped Romania take control from the beginning. Their line players were too strong for the Russian defenders and Romanian goalkeeper Prenda was almost unbeatable.

With Romania holding a big gap for most parts of the game, all Russia could do was temporarily cut the difference to four goals (20:16) in the beginning of the second half, but their efficiency gradually faded, allowing Romania to snatch an easy victory.

QUOTES

Aleksandr Kovalenko (Coach Russia): “We tried our best, but still we didn’t avoid yet another defeat. We hope we will win our last game.”

Narcis Citu (Coach Romania): “We were better today in both defence and attack. Of course we had some bad moments in our game as well, but it is natural after playing so many games in such a short period.”
